Sunday Night Dread

I remember when I was little I used to dread Sunday nights.  Friday night I was finally free from school and I can do whatever is that little kids do on the weekend.  It isn’t that I hated school I just thought I could better spend my time doing something else.  Friday night was mine and on Saturday I knew I still had a one day buffer until I had to go back.  Come Sunday I knew that it was only matter of time and I soon would be heading back.  Often on Sunday nights I would get up out of my bed and look out my window hoping that the ground would be covered with 3 feet of snow.  The snow would mean school is cancelled and I would be free for another day.  However, I was almost always disappointed as I went back to my bed.  Then I moved to Houston and it never snows here.  :(

How Much He’s Missed

Didn’t realize just how much he’s missed, until I read and remembered some of his statements…

‘Here’s my strategy on the Cold War: We win, they lose.’- Ronald Reagan

‘The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. . was too strong.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘I have wondered at times about what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘The taxpayer: That’s someone who works for the federal government but doesn’t have to take the civil service examination.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a government program.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is as formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women.’
- Ronald Reagan

‘If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God , then we will be a nation gone under.’
- Ronald Reagan

In a Store Near You

Today a new low has hit the Houston stores. They already have Christmas stuff up. Not only that, the Halloween and Thanksgiving stuff is nearly nonexistent. Do the stores think that Obama and his stellar administration will drive the economy so far into the ground before December that there won’t be Christmas this year?  Is that why stores already have Christmas stuff on display?

Exercise

The only exercise some people get is jumping to conclusions, running down their friends, side-stepping responsibility, and pushing their luck!

The Plan

In the beginning was “The Plan.”
And then came Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And “The Plan” was without substance.
And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.
And they spoke amongst themselves, saying, “It is a crock of crap which stinketh.”
And the Workers went unto their Supervisors and said, “It is a pail of dung, and none may abide thereof.”
And the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying, “It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it.”
And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, “It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may withstand its strength.”
And the Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying one to the other, “It contains that which aids plant growth and it is very strong.”
And the Directors then went unto the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, “It promotes growth and it is very powerful.”
And the Vice Presidents went to the President, saying unto him, “This new Plan will actively promote the growth and vigor of the company with powerful effect.”
And the President looked upon the plan and saw that it was good.
And “The Plan” became policy.

CALM Act

I am believer that we have too many laws in this country.  For example, why do we have laws that say we must wear a seatbelt while driving? That seems like a useless law to me. The government shouldn’t have to tell me that I need to wear my seatbelt. If you don’t want to wear it then that should be your choice. If you get in an accident then you will have to face the consequences. Take responsibility for yourself.

I don’t think all laws are useless.  I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore but when I did one thing that really annoyed me was the ever changing volume levels between the program I was watching and the commercials. Why do the commercials always have to be 10 times louder than the program? There ought to be a law that says the volume should me the same for the program and commercials. As it turns out there is a law in the works.

The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act was first introduced on Feb 13, 2009. It basically requires the Federal Communications Commission to prescribe a standard to preclude commercials from being broadcast at louder volumes than the program material they accompany.  Finally the folks in DC are spending my tax dollars on something worthwhile. I have to applaud whoever came up with the acronym.

Don’t get too excited. The CALM Act hasn’t been made into law yet as far as I can tell. According to govtrack.org it was approved by the House on Dec 15, 2009 but it hasn’t passed the Senate. For now you will still need to grab the remote to turn down the volume when the commercials come on. I suppose you could always get Netflix in the meantime.
